What are the common signs of Trauma?
Most believe that Trauma is only found in veterans or individuals that have experienced a horrific event such as a natural disaster. This is untrue. Trauma can be defined as anything that overwhelms you and your ability to cope with the circumstances. So you may be wondering what are the common signs to look out for?
There are 5 categories of symptoms to notice. 1. Emotional Symptoms, 2. Cognitive Symptoms, 3. Physical Symptoms, 4. Behavioural Symptoms, 5. Interpersonal Symptoms.
Emotional Symptoms: Did you know that anxiety, depression, irritability and numbness are all signs of trauma? Most believe these are separate issues however, they may signal a bigger problem
Cognitive Symptoms: There are classic symptoms that one may associate such as flash backs and nightmares. However, there are less known signs such as intrusive thoughts, memories, difficulty concentrating or making decisions that signal Trauma.
Physical Symptoms: Often the first complaint I hear from my trauma clients is sleep disturbance. Less known effects would be physical pain without a cause, changes in appetite or weight, and being easily startled.
Behavioural Symptoms: Did you know that avoidance and isolation are signs of Trauma? That’s right… this is a sign that most associate with depression and anxiety however, the root of the problem may be Trauma.
Interpersonal Symptoms: A key theme I notice as a clinician in all trauma cases is some disruption to interpersonal relationships. Whether that is shutting down when communicating with your partner or staying surface-level with friends.
Trauma can be devastating and impact many areas of one’s life. That is why it is so important to discover the underlying causes and find ways to heal with a mental health professional such as myself.
You’re one step closer to finding clarity :)
